Product Description
Sumac Bran is a high-tannin variety of sorghum.
This plant is native to the Mediterranean areas of Sicily and Southern Italy. It is also found in parts of the Middle East such as Iran. This plant has a red velvety cone on the tip of the branches. The word sumac originates from “sumagaâ€Âļ†, meaning 'red' in Syriac. Sumac Bran and its extract have been used globally for its health benefits and nutritional properties. Recent studies have revealed many benefits that this extract gives to the body. This article will focus on these health benefits, the interaction with the various substances, the dosage and the side effects of this extract. *
Product Benefits
This super extract has been famed for its health benefits. Some research suggests that these benefits could include antioxidant support, cholesterol health, cardiovascular health, microbial and fungal health and skin health. *
  • Antioxidant Health. In 2013, a study published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal "Food Chemistry" aimed at measuring the antioxidant properties of Sumac Bran Extract. The results showed that the extract was able to exert significant antioxidant activities[1][2]. It also showed that sumac has higher antioxidant activities than many common fruits and vegetables, qualifying it as a 'superfood'. The strong antioxidant properties were largely attributed to polyphenols such as anthocyanins and other flavonoids found in sumac bran extract. Another study that was published in the Journal of Food Biochemistry in April 2014 analyzed the antioxidant capacity of water extracts of Sicilian sumac, along with extracts of a number of other spices, including barberry, cardamom, black pepper, red pepper, fennel, laurel, turmeric, and nutmeg. Among the tested spices, sumac bran extract came out on top in terms of antioxidant capacity, followed by laurel and barberry. Antioxidants are essential molecules that neutralize free radicals in the body[1]. These radicals are responsible for the various conditions, such as aging and diseases. *
  • Healthy Cholesterol levels. A study that was published in the Iranian Journal of Pharmaceutical Research found that blood sugar management could be supported by adding sumac bran extract in their daily meals[3]. In another study, published in the June 2013 edition of the Journal of Medicinal Plants Research, a team of Iranian scientists evaluated the efficacy and safety of Ziabetes. This herbal formulation contains common purslane(Portulaca oleracea L.), Sicilian sumac (Rhus coriaria L.) and pomegranate(Punica granatum L.), and has been used in the Middle East as a traditional remedy for healthy blood sugar. Not only did the herbal formulation appear to be safe with no reported side effects, it was also found be effective at decreasing fasting and post-meal blood glucose levels in type 2 blood sugar patients. This was a clear indicator that this extract may support of healthy cholesterol levels in the blood[3]. *
  • Atherosclerosis. Sumac bran extract might be effective in supporting cardiovascular health [4]. This is due to the high levels of antioxidant tannins that the extract contains. Scientists at the Sacred Heart School of Montreal, Canada, carried out a study to investigate whether Sumac extract could inhibit vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) migration. This is a process that plays a key role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). This research found out that the tannins extracted from sumac appear to possess potent anti-migratory properties and might, therefore, offer potential cardio supporting benefits [4]. *
  • Bacteria, Fungus, Viral.. Studies have revealed that the sumac bran extract has microbial supporting properties[5]. For instance, a study published in the International Journal of Food Microbiology stated that this extract's microbial properties can support salmonella bacteria[6]. Still, water that has the sumac bran extract can be used to treat vegetables and fruits in the process of getting rid of bacteria on them. The microbial supporting properties of sumac, according to a study published in Journal of Ethnopharmacology were attributed to the presence of methyl gallic acid, gallic acid, and other compounds. In the traditional setup, the bark of the sumac bran plant was used as an antiseptic[6].
  • Another study that was published in German bio-science journal, Zeitschrift Fuer Naturforschung, showed that seeds of sumac are effective for supporting fungal growth which can lead to lung and other types of infections in the body. Another study confirmed that the use of sumac bran extract was effective in supporting the healthy management of viruses, suggesting potential strong viral supporting activity. *
  • Dense Nutrient Source. Sumac bran was used by the traditional communities to replenish nutrients in the body[5]. This super food is well known for having lots of compounds and minerals that are essential for the normal functioning of the body. It would be prudent, therefore, to have the extract by your side to cater for your body's nutrient needs. Greek physician; Pedanius Dioscorides describes it in his medical journal as a 'must-have herb' and he states the various health benefits that come with it. *
  • Skin Protector. Our sumac bran extract has cell-calming and microbial supporting properties[7][8]. This makes it a perfect support for healthy skin and wound health. The extract may also support skin rashes, gums, and sore lips. This makes the sumac bran extract a perfect remedy for skin health. *
